How to Choose the Right Bed Size for Your Bedroom

Start with the room, not the bed

The biggest bed your budget allows isn't always the right one. Before choosing, measure your bedroom and remember the bed shouldn't dominate it — you still need room to walk, open wardrobes and place side tables. A good target is at least 60–75 cm of clearance on the sides you walk around.

Know the common sizes

  • Single: one person, kids' rooms, compact guest rooms.
  • Queen: the all-rounder for couples and most master bedrooms.
  • King: spacious sleep for couples, families who co-sleep, or anyone who likes room to stretch.

Match the bed to who's sleeping

A restless sleeper or a couple with a pet or young child benefits from going one size up. If you sleep alone but love space, a queen feels luxurious without overwhelming a mid-size room.

Don't forget the frame footprint

A bed's actual footprint is bigger than the mattress — storage beds, upholstered headboards and footboards all add length and width. Always plan around the frame's outer dimensions, not just the mattress size.

Test the doorways

A king bed is no good if it can't reach the room. Check that the frame (or its parts) will fit through doorways, staircases and lifts before you buy.
